Must Go... Oporto, Portugal
Portugal is having a moment. It seems as though every person I know has just come back from or is headed there - Lisbon in particular with a jaunt to the gorgeous beaches in the south. I like the northern part of the country and the mountainous interior where there is less tourist traffic and where you can literally get lost in time. Years ago I spent two glorious weeks there on my honeymoon driving the along the Camino de Santiago to Oporto perched on the Duoro River drinking the most gorgeous Port wines (most unavailable for export) before heading to the lesser visited Obidos (an ancient walled city) and Ponte De Lima, nestled in the mountainous interior. The food is perfect, the people are warm and inviting, and vistas are spectacular.
Loving... Yamazaki Home
I fell in love with this Tower Leaning Ladder rack from Yamazaki Home made of powder coated steel and wood. Modern, practical and every so Scandi, it is the perfect place to drape a blanket or pile on newspapers and magazines. A 100 year old family business hailing from Nara, Japan specializing in home goods with a design mission to “act on a sense of wonder.'“ How great is that?
Crushing on ... lilah b.
Since I first used my bubble gum flavored Kissing Potion Lip Gloss in 8th grade, I have been a committed low fi beauty routine gal. It all begins with a good face cream (I love Yonka) and then a bit of cheek and lip color, a swipe of mascara and then I am out of the door. So naturally I would swoon over products that do more than one things, like lilah b.’s creamy, matte lip and cheek duo - a long-wearing and moisturizing formula provides that provides blendable and buildable color. Made in Italy, this routine game changer is formulated with coconut oil to smooth and moisturize; aloe to soothe and moisturize; and agar to leave skin hydrated and glowing. Best of all it is vegan and cruelty-free.
Must See...Hilma af Klint at the Guggenheim
In a shocking departure from the the aggrandizing abstract expressionists of the 20th century, Hilma af Klint mandated that no one see her work until twenty years after her death, sensing that the world was not ready to understand the deep spiritual nature of her work. Because of this her work was virtually unseen until 1987. Born in Stockholm in 1862 and graduating from the Royal Academy of Fines Arts in 1887, af Klint began as a figurative painter, quickly moving into abstract art. The large scale colorful abstractions aside from expanding our notions of abstraction and spirituality in art, are a perfect antidote to a world gone mad. On view at The Guggenheim in NYC through April 23, 2019. Read more about the artist and the exhibition here.
